Interest in Conceptual art at the London Metropolitan allowed us to develop this approach to our work by using different media and this is reflected in the way I work with the image.
I use newspaper photographs to explore social, political and cultural issues that are represented by these images. My intention is to subvert the narrative, to develop potential ambiguities by my treatment of these, in particular, by using specific materials that act as a vehicle for expressing my emotional responses to events.
Background
Career decisions are often based on practical considerations rather than on emotional ones. Because of this it took some time for me to make a decision, after a career in the health services, to commit myself to becoming an artist. But like most women, family commitments and child rearing meant waiting several more years for the appropriate time.
In 2002 I started a P/T BA FA degree at the London Metropolitan University in East London. I finish this in 2006.
